About Marine Biosphere Lookout

Marine Biosphere Lookout is a marine biodiversity observation and documentation initiative created to support awareness and conservation outreach for the ecosystems of Palk Bay and the Gulf of Mannar.

The project focuses on creating an accessible and growing archive of marine species observations contributed by divers, underwater photographers, ocean ambassadors and marine enthusiasts exploring the coastline around Rameswaram and South India.

A Community Driven Marine Archive

The oceans surrounding the region host an extraordinary diversity of marine life including:

  • coral reef species

  • seagrass ecosystems

  • rays and reef sharks

  • turtles

  • nudibranchs

  • cephalopods

  • reef fish

  • endangered marine species

Many of these ecosystems remain under documented in publicly accessible visual archives.

Marine Biosphere Lookout was created to help bridge that gap through collaborative field observations and community participation.

Built Around Exploration & Documentation

The project encourages contributors to document:

  • species sightings

  • underwater habitats

  • behavioural observations

  • ecosystem changes

  • rare marine encounters

  • environmental concerns

Over time, these observations help create a regional marine biodiversity archive that can support:

  • conservation awareness

  • educational outreach

  • species familiarity

  • ecosystem storytelling

  • citizen science participation

Conservation Through Visibility

One of the greatest challenges facing marine ecosystems is invisibility.

Many coastal communities and ocean users are unaware of the biodiversity that exists beneath the surface of Palk Bay and the Gulf of Mannar.

By documenting and sharing these underwater observations, Marine Biosphere Lookout aims to increase visibility and appreciation for marine ecosystems and the species that depend on them.

Supporting Ocean Stewardship

The project is designed to encourage responsible ocean engagement and inspire more people to:

  • explore marine ecosystems responsibly

  • document marine biodiversity

  • participate in conservation awareness

  • develop species identification skills

  • become long term ocean ambassadors

A Growing Species Archive

As contributions grow, Marine Biosphere Lookout will continue expanding its species archive and educational content library focused on the marine biodiversity of South India.

Every contribution adds to the collective understanding of our oceans.
