Observation Summary
During a night dive at the Golf Course Dive Site in Palk Bay, a Pharaoh Cuttlefish (Sepia pharaonis) was observed resting and camouflaging itself against the sandy seabed.
At first glance, the animal was almost indistinguishable from the surrounding shell rubble and sediment. Only upon closer inspection were its eyes, feeding tentacles and body outline visible. The cuttlefish had altered both its colour and skin texture, creating a highly effective disguise that blended seamlessly into the surrounding habitat.
This observation highlights one of the most remarkable adaptations found in marine life—the ability of cephalopods to rapidly change their appearance in response to their environment.

About the Species
The Pharaoh Cuttlefish is one of the most commonly encountered cuttlefish species in Indian coastal waters and throughout the Indo-Pacific region.
Like all cuttlefish, it belongs to the cephalopod group, which includes squid and octopus. These animals are renowned for their intelligence, complex behaviour and extraordinary camouflage abilities.
Using specialised pigment cells known as chromatophores, along with reflective skin cells and muscular skin papillae, cuttlefish can change colour, pattern and texture within seconds.
A Master of Disguise
The raised skin projections visible in this observation are known as papillae. By extending these structures, the cuttlefish creates a rough, uneven surface that closely resembles surrounding rocks, shells and marine debris.
