Observation Summary

During a dive on the AR2D2 Artificial Reef in Palk Bay, a colonial sea squirt (Class Ascidiacea) was observed growing on the reef structure at a depth of approximately 6 metres.

The colony formed a dense cluster of individual filter-feeding zooids embedded within a shared outer tissue known as a tunic. Under close inspection, dozens of feeding openings were visible across the colony surface, creating a striking pattern that resembles a field of miniature eyes.

Although often overlooked by recreational divers, colonial ascidians are important ecosystem engineers that help transform artificial reef structures into thriving underwater habitats.

Colonial ascidians, commonly known as colonial sea squirts, are marine filter feeders that grow as interconnected groups of individual animals called zooids.
